Vauxhall Astra Sport 1.6i problem

I have recently bought a N reg 1.6i astra sport which has been running fine.In the last few days a yellow dash board warning light has been intermittently showing featuring an engine symbol with a electrical flash in the centre. I dont have an owners book so are unsure of its meaning. The light comes on and off but doesnt appear to be affecting the performance or anything on the car, and the frequency of the light being displayed follows no pattern. Have you any ideas
