Electric kettle whistle??

A few weeks ago I got a new electric kettle - it has a flat bottom heating element - and it has developed a loud shrill whistle as it is heating up. Does anyone have any tips about how to stop, or at least lessen, the noise?
Why does this happen, anyway? I presume that it's caused by the element vibrating. Any advice appreciated.

easy, take it back to the shop and ask for a replacement. it's so new that a repair could be turned down " i want a replacement "

If you have very hard water you can't have a flat plate heating element, as this whistling and thumping will start in a few days.

We had exactly the same problem and had to switch back to a coiled element.
