Hangover cures

It's the week before Christmas, I'm sure I'm not alone in coming to work this morning with a savage hangover. I realise I only have myself to blame, so I'm not after sympathy, but does anybody know any genuine hangover cures to make the next 8 hours less painful? I would be very grateful.

Nothing really works for me apart from drinking gallons of water, and I do feel better after eating something stodgy like cheese on toast, pizza, bacon sarnie, sausage roll, etc.  Bananas are supposed to be good for you because they are full of potassium - but who wants a banana when you're hungover?  Eat junk all day and drink lots of water or juice - it works for me.

If you can nip out to the chemist get some re-hydration drink mixes, they come in all sorts of flavour (blackcurrant reccommended).  Get one of these down you and it works a treat cause the reason you feel crap is ur dehydrated which causes the brain to swell and therefore produces the headache so re-hydrate and it all goes away!
Lucozade - really cold and keep it fizzy - works wonders, also try a berocca, available from boots, they're a vitamin drink (one of those fizzy tablets in a glass of water according to Eastenders), and give you a massive hit of vitamin C which helps. Agree with natalie, "fat food" ie pizza, fry up, sausage roll, bacon sarnie also works a treat.

a cup of tea with a spoonful of sugar (or an extra spoonful if you already take sugar) always eases the nausea for me, then i eat some salty crisps.

 

For next time, try taking a combination of milk thistle and artichoke tablets (available from health food shops and boots) to stop it occurring in the first place

I thik I am still drunk from last night, so I am sitting here at work waiting for the hangover to kick in.
A sachet of 'RESOLVE' diluted in a large glass of cold water, always does the trick for me. It has a citrus flavour & we're never without a pack in the medicine box!

P.S. It is actually a medical remedy for

'The morning after the night before'.

Thanks guys (especially Octavious, it's nice to know I'm not alone).

It's time for me to venture out for some food and a trip to Boots, and if all else fails the pubs are open in half in hour!

Resolve really is a miracle cure but I can't stand the taste.  I get round this by dissolving it in as little water as possible (approx 1 or 2 gulps), swallow as quickly as poss & then follow with an ice-cold Coke.  Never fails.

The other cure if you have time is a game of footy (the worse a player you are the better, cos you'll be running around more!)
dry toast /burnt toast/ creamcracker and hot sugary tea...or seven up.....and here is a good one....massage the top/crown of your head with your fingertips and this will alleviate some of your headache ...but it will only do so for a short time after you have stopped....if you are a supervisor perhaps you could get one of your underlings to do it for the rest of the work day.....

I usually have a Full Monty breakfast(eggs, beans, sausage, fried bread etc) with a large mug of sweet tea, then drink a lot of flat coke during the day.

 

Apparently the best prevention is to take two paracetamol and a pint of water just before going to bed.

Maybe try to avoid them in future. Try sticking to drinking approximately the same thing during the evening, interspersed with taking small amounts of water - maybe keep a bottle of water on the go and keep sipping at it. Eat fairly well during the course of the evening. Drink more water when you get home, and have some orange juice when you get up and try to get some fresh air. I don't see why these "rehydration drinks" should work any better than water - if you need rehydrating, why should something dissolved in water work any better than just the water itself?

 

Also, the hangover isn't just a simple case of being dehydrated. There are all sorts of other chemical things going on - not least that the more alcohol you take in, the more the body oxidises it to ketones, which are things you don't want hanging around in your system - they are a big contributing factor to why you feel so rough the next day. I'm not wagging a finger & saying "don't get drunk" but just to not get carried away - you can stick to mainly one type of drink and have enough to get enjoyably drunk without going to excess and that should limit your hangover horror.

 

Of course, you could try becoming me. Even after the most excessive drinking binge, I don't get hangovers. Ha ha ha ha!!!!!

ALF, just wondering whether you managed to get to the chemist & buy some Resolve? If not, hope you still managed to get through the day okay.

Well Smudge, I'm still alive! I went for the option of eating stodgy food and drinking lots of water and tea. I gradually felt better as the day wore on, but it was my office Christmas party last night so I was back in the bar at 5 o'clock. The first drink was difficult to get down but after that I was fine. Bizarrely this morning I feel as fresh as a daisy, even though I probably drank more last night than the night before.

An early night is definitely on the cards tonight! 

Just stay drunk.  It worked for Uncle Dave.  He stayed drunk for about 8 years,  not one hang-over!
