gypsy?

hello. my gf and i have just bought a van to do up as a place to live. we are making it as habitable as possible and plan to go about our everyday lives still working paying taxes etc. my questiion though is this. how do you view this way of life as im sure we will get called pikeys gypsys etc. now i am not in the slightest bit bothered by this but it would be interesting to find out peoples views and why they have them. cheers

motor van. less hassle that way we can park and move on where and when we like. within reason.

Why bother what people think of you? Life's too short!

The only drawback as far as I'd be concerned would be that as you said you were still working, I'm presuming you won't/ can't travel too far from your jobs? So you would still be limited as to where you can park up each evening.

Oh and if you have a row- it's harder go sulk in another room- lol.

Camper vans are freezing in the winter ..
so maybe rethink and house share in
the bad weather ..but I like the idea...

a gypsy to me is like a person that parks up on illegal places, ummm acts trampy, has a bit of an irish accent (no affence to irish but thts wt it sound like) steal things, get money anyway possible (illegal ways etc) so as long as ur not like that i dont think you are a gypsy :)

you're more likely to be called Australian. I did that for a few months yonks ago, used to spend the night in car park buildings, which didn't charge overnight, or campsites, or just on side streets. But (as we expected) it got very cold in winter so we gave up and rented a flat, and didn't really go back to it in the spring. But we basically did it to travel, and saw a lot of Britain and Europe that we wouldn't have done otherwise. I don't know about doing it as a regular home while still keeping a job. How do you arrange for mail deliveries, or if you need to show your gas bills to join Blockbuster?

Good luck. I am a bit envious, as we had always talked about this but never actually did it. You can keep a relative's address as your official mailing address and ask them to scan and email anything important, there is no need to miss out on anything.

i quite like the idea but its just the toilet facilities that put me off - i'd need a flushinh loo and a proper shower and that would mean some massive expensive hulking camper van typed thing... though i sort of toyed with the idea of renting out my flat for a summer and living out and about until the weather turned.

Mate of mine does it and managed to cope all winter by getting a wood burning stove fitted - it was actually really warm in there and set up so he could cook on it and heat water etc.

hey all cheers for t5he replys. basically we are both self employed and can move around reasonably freely so will be able to do quite a bit of travelling. as with winter, well we will see how it goes but no doubt we will be renting a very warm flat. haha. showers and a flushing toilet iam considering trying to install something myself but if not we are both members of a nationwide gym and as long as we stay nearby to a big town/city then we can use all of the facilities with the added bonus of staying fit. the only way to really find out is to actually do it. so watch this space!
