Well you do actually need to want to give up.
Set aside a day, get some nicotine chewing gum, e.g Nicotinell fruit 4mg. Go into the countryside, take no fags or matches, spend just one whole day NOT smoking. You will get a sense of achievement that will carry through to the next day, and so on. I have been off the fags for 5 years or more now, still chewing the gum, but that is a new problem and one which is preferable to inhaling smoke.
Good luck.

funny thing is that im not allowed to smoke at work (only during breaks) and i dont have one....and most of the time i dont crave one,but as soon as i leave work im lighting one up!!!and i think to myself ive just done 8 hours without one why am i having one now.....but i guess thats my will power there
I quit for 4 months on patches as I didn't think I had the willpower to do it on my own and it gave me a kind of crutch and routine reinforcing wanting to give up and taking a big edge off the cravings.
I kept a diary of how many cigs I'd not smoked, quite scary to see them add up, and allocated a price per cig to show how much I'd saved. I also made notes of how much better it made me feel (I swear I could see better!), how I felt calmer and more relaxed, cleaner etc...
I used the mindset that I wasn't going to let little white cancer causing sticks control me and thought of all the nice things like not smelling any more of being an antisocial smoker now you can't smoke indoors in public, getting rid of that hoarseness in your throat etc...
I bought nice smelling stuff as well so I could feel nice smelling nice and being able to smell it.
I'd buy venti coffee's from starbucks and sip them gradually and used lots of chewing gum.
As said above though, it only works if you really want to quit.

I'd go with Allen Carrs easy way - not cheap, but you do get a money back guarantee and it is still cheaper than smoking.
This is the method that Doctors and Nurses use to give up.
I've not smoked, but my OH used this and gave up pretty easily.

Giving up ciggies iis the simplest thing to do. I did it very easily ,about three times a week.Seriously I did stop a year past march and thats after more than forty five years of more than 25 a day. I did it with patches and the total dertermination to succeed ( sorry if that sounds like the same as willpower)
The rewards are enormous, each to their own but a smoke free life is very pleasurable
