If you check the back of your desktop case or laptop case there should be a Microsoft validation number to prove that there was a genuine Vista or XP operating system installed on the machine by the manufacturers. Borrow a Vista or XP operating disk from a friend and boot up .When it asks you for the validation code type in the numbers on your case..not the code that your friend uses.
This should get you up and running.

hi,
Further to your question. A reboot only means shutting down the computer and restarting it. I presume you mean reformat which will scrub everything including Vista.
To reformat, delete everything by clicking on Start then Explore and delete all that will delete.
When this is done, right click on C drive and select Format.
Warning..as I say this will scrub your entire hard drive so you must have a windows VIsta or XP disk
