Surely it was the Wright Brothers?
i<3answers is correct
Whitehead flew his one man plane a couple of years before the Wright brothers although it was a very short distance - about 1/2 mile?
I'm sure you can find out if you Google
Depends what you mean by airplane obviously you have the mongolfier brothers

If you mean heavier than air, un-powered, Sir George Cayleigh build a glider in 1799 and a 10 year old boy flew in it.

It looks likely that Whitehead beat the Wrights to the first powered flight but it's so long ago now that it's unlikely to re-write any history books
the Wrights' first flight was only 120 feet, so half a mile's not bad.
