Just told my dad I love him when we said goodbye. We work together and he's had to go out for the day. I say it to anyone in my family all the time! :)

I say it in different ways.
There is the "I love you" as kids/hubby/family walk out the door to go to school.work etc...
But then there is the "I love you" with meaning behind it that my hubby and kids know what I mean! When you look in their eyes or hold them close and say it with feeling!
(Not that I don't mean it when I say it in passing)

I think saying 'I love you' to kids on a regular basis is a very new concept. My mother never said it to me and quite honestly I never heard it said to any kids by their mothers and fathers when I was young. (I am in my sixties). They certainly loved their children and I am in no doubt my parents loved me, they just were less forthcoming in expressing themselves.
I think I always mean it when I say it and don't say it as part of a routine.
Do any of you tell really close friends that you love them as well? I have a couple of friends that always say it to me and it is really lovely. It certainly makes me feel very wanted and cheers me up when I am down.

I always tell my best friends, Lottie. You're right about it being a new-ish thing with parents and their kids, though.
My mum can't ever remember her mum and dad telling her and they still don't. My mum tells me that's what made her want to tell us all the time.
Us grandkids always say it to our grandma and grandad, more so now because we know it gets them all flustered when they don't know what to say, but when my grandma was seriously ill about six months ago, she said, "I love you" to us all for the first time. :)
