Hi folks.
Am stuck on this one.
17 down sudden strong wind or storm often accompanied by precipitation? If 17 across is 'square' have:-
s??a?s. It can't be squalls obviously.

Don't know 17a, but would go with SQUALL and recheck.
You must have 23 a wrong - It is Loire (presume you put Seine)
17d is squall 23a is loire

Thanks very much for that folks. Finished now it was doin my head in. Yes I did put Seine for longest river, I thought that WAS the longest river in France
