I beg to differ. There really is a green dot, and the pink ones really do disappear. All because it tells you at the beginning so it makes your mind believe this is happening!

Question Author
But if there was a green dot you would see it if you looked at it, no? And they would disappear when you looked at the pink dots? The pink dots don't disappear if you just look at the cross, but if you *concentrate* on the cross the pink dots disappear. So so weird.
So therefore concentration is the key.....can I have the biggest cuddly toy as my prize. : )
magenta and green are opposite each other on colour wheels (if you've got Photoshop and you reduce the green in a picture, it increases the pink, and vice versa), so they're related... somehow. I'm not sure if it's staring at a black cross that gives you this 'negative' effect.

ah ok thanks jno. The cones in the eye maybe create the illusion through image after effect caused by fatigue. The flashing dot is very straining on the 'eye' itself and this would exhaust the energy of the cone (which senses colour) and it's known that this sapping causes the opposite to be 'seen' by the brain. Just guessing here.
Question Author
would you like to pick a cuddly toy jno?
'staring at the black cross' which is concentrating, ( what jno said I meant lol) just because jno explained it better doesn't mean a win.... the cuddly toy is mine...
Good little trick though Margo!

in visual processing there is a thing called 'cognitive impenetrability' and a red line that goes with it, and it means that no matter how hard you think of something you cannot change the way it works. For example, it is very hard to look at an orange and think it red. But you can 'think' a memory into a different memory. I don't think you are concentrating the green dot into existence but u are right I think the act of concentration causes some kind of distortion in peripheral processing. I did not know the eyes could 'tune' like that.
Oooo that's cleverly odd , thanks for that margo :-) xxx
