the sunday times travel quiz. important notice

for everyone doing the sunday times travel quiz who are finding it difficult to answer q19 (what have jean shrimpton, neil morrissey, francis ford coppola and gerald ford got in common) the times have just issued an apology on their website. gerald ford should have read jimmy carter and the answer is they all own hotels. this question has now been removed from the quiz.

Thanks Flak.  I would have entered the hotel answer anyway as it seemed most logical but I googled for ages.  Good job we all have nothing better to do at Christmas eh?

Pity they didn't also clarify Q17 to say if they wanted the distances by car, car & ferry, plane or simply straight line!

I think we should all say question 17 is ambiguous in our answers otherwise if they just see 4 letters in different orders they'll just eliminate you.incidentally i may be paranoid but do you think they print off the email answers?

I doubt they print off the emails, just store them for later validation. I recall that 2 years ago they had 5,000+ entries. It must be a nightmare checking them, particularly on screen so I'm going to send hard copy. I'm tempted to give three answers to Q17 the the headings 'by car' by car & ferry' and 'by air'. I'll probably be eliminated but will maintain the moral high ground - 'grin'.

They have to put something in the draw though for the correct email answers.Maybe it should be televised!

My thoughts on 17: I think they're looking for one form of transport as per 18 if we're being logical (but are they?). therefore it has to be by road since I don't think you can sail from Madrid to Paris etc. Are you with me?????

what would the compiler do?would he check an auto route or would he use a ruler?i suspect the former but it's a very ambiguous question.it could just be a simple arithmetical question or it could be practical.the fact that the next question mentions flying distance suggests road routes to me but honestly who knows?

Re: email, I don't know how they do it, but my brother won the runner-up prize (trip for two to Paris) last year on this contest and he sent his answers in once only (as per rules; you get eliminated for multiple entries from same household) by email only (in a Word attachment).

A final thought on Q17. One thing they all have in common is train stations. Why choose Aberdeen/Penzance rather than Lands End/John O'Groats? This would favour the road/rail distance answer particularly as the next question specifically mentions flying as the mode of transport. Think I'll go for the road/rail option with a note about it being ambiguous! I always seen to get two questions wrong so this can be one of them for this year!
