thank you Junkman, I have it now. You are an angel xx I think I may just give up on this cryptic lark, it goes right over the top of my head! But so obvious when someone points out the answer.

Don't give up mazie - if you do the same crossword regularly, you'll soon pick up on the little hints leading to anagrams and the like.
And you can always ask on here !!
