d day today

I was talking to an elderly english couple in the street about 5 minutes ago.
They asked me the date i said its june 6th D DAY.
She said whatsD DAY and he looked at me vacantly.
Is this normal do old folk just not care?
Afterall it was them they fought for we werent even thought of.

It would appear D DAY is of no importance to anyone after alll these years .

I mentioned my flight day as 6th June - D Day. And I'm only young!!!!!!

Recently Bentley Priory closed down. It was the underground command centre for the Battle of Britain and a large RAF base. We lived near it for years. El tel worked in there several times. Very historic place. Fairly good coverage of closure on BBC news but nothing at all in any of the papers.

Perhaps only selected stuff remembered now.

The couple looked at me as if to say wtf are you rambling about .I got as far as saying d day , second world war then thought why bother.
Its not just young folk that can be uninterested it seems.


And they fought for them too , why did they bother ?

My father in law was one of the paras who landed at Pegasus Bridge the day before the D-day landings to cut off the German supply line. He always remembered & visited the area several times - but like most of his comrades he is no longer around. However my teenage son surprised me this morning by reminding me that today was D-day.

Its only 60 odd years ago not exactly ancient history.
Yet everytime theres some immigrant bashing thread we read about our grandfathers fighting in a war so we could be freee and not overrun by foreigners and lets not forget we hear about great british empire alll the bleedin time on here.

Just seems strange that folk dont appear to remember or care.

If my dad and H's dad are anything to go by, and they fought in WWII, then they don't really want to remember it all again.
