I havent seen this film in ages, but near the start they go and visit a drug dealer and he tells a story and follows it by saying 'if you figure out that joke, youve figured out the streets'. What was the story/joke, and did anyone understand it?

you're not meant to figure it out ie you can never figure the streets out

thats what I thought, but doesnt ethan hawke give him an answer almost immediately which the drug dealer agrees with?
