Not classic

I changed my laptop end of last week to "classic" but cannot get used to it and want to change back to what it was. The trouble being I dont know what it was or worse how to do it. I am stupid why I keep changing things I do not know , must be looking for the ultimate which never comes. Help! TIA

If you are using XP try

Start - control panel

In the left hand panel, click switch to category view.

Or is this not want you meant?

Right click an empty part of task bar select properties then select the start menu tab at the top and click in the start menu radio button and click ok.

I think you are right to have a look round your computer, it`s the only way to learn, and like Ethel says little will be fatal. i`ve made some bad mistakes, but always managed to sort it out, usually with help from here or from googling.
