Mobile phone masts

There is talk of a mobile phone mast being erected in our village which has generated the predictable bleats about the possible (but as yet unproven) health risk. At the same time, most of the population own mobiles and presumably expect a decent service. I neither own nor use a mobile, but have two questions.

 

Isn't it hypocritical to expect a good mobile telephone service in your area while complaining about the installation of the necessary infrastructure to bring this about?

 

Isn't there a far greater risk attached to having the phone clamped to your ear as opposed to being several hundred yards away from a mast?

 

If people are so concerned about the risks of mobile phone masts, why don't they stop using their mobiles altogether � that would solve it surely?

1. Yes, it is hypocritical!
2. I don't know enough about the science to comment.
3. The convenience and social need/pressure to have one outweighs any risks.

Put it this way, at least you will have a good signal if you decide to buy a mobile phone.

I'm happy to use electricity but I don't want the chimney of a power station being fed into my living room.
If these masts are at all dangerous then there must be a way to make them less so, either by design or location (e.g. by putting them on top of other buildings away from the general public)..

I once read that modern mobile phones give off less radiation than a lightbulb.

I seriously doubt they're dangerous, the technology has been around for decades, what side affects have arisen so far?
