When you get a quote for car insurance why do they need to know your occupation - even if its for private use only?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.because some occupations are classed as a higher risk than others, I believe that journalist is one of the highest, I assume they think you may offend somebody and get your car damaged due to it. think members of the armed forces are quite high too.

not really, as I said it's not your driving that is causing the risk, it's the increased risk your car may be in due to your profession.
As I pointed out a professional footballer may very likely get their car wrecked by a rival fan, how carefully the footballer drives has no bearing on that but it is still an increased risk on a claim being made so the insurance companys cover their backs by charging more.
