book i read in school

hey people
im not going to be surprised if no-one answers this koz my description of the book will be very vauge (sp?) because i read it ages ago.
Anyway
i started thinking about it (it just popped up in my memory) and its been annoying me because i cant remember the name of the book or anything
heres what i can remember of it:
its was a bit of a fantasy book. I remember the main character was a boy, and he had these two sort of pet things, but one was a dog that was made of stone that ate rocks and i cant remember what the other one was, i think it was a bird of some sort.
Theres only one part of the book i can really remember.
Its was when he had been captured by the bad guy, and he had been in this cave as the bad guy tried to break his spirit or something
anyway
he had been trapped in this cave and i remember that it was saying something like:
'the cave door opened and i looked out. It was raining. The temptation to leave, to run away was overwhelming, but i knew he would just catch me if i tried. So i sighed and stayed put, watching the rain on the other side, on the outside world.
"Excellent..." said (the bad guy)'
yes very vauge i know, but any answers would be appreitated thanks
