While the parliamentary Conservatives oppose 42 days, there is a lot of evidence that the public and grassroots tories are in favour of it. If Davis does try to campaign on this single issue, Murdoch's empire will oppose him.
Or the Monster Raving Looney Party might scrape it.

Maybe Mackenzie thinks he would do better in Yorkshire than he did in Weybridge last month.

He has *NOT* resigned on a matter of principle.
Had the Tories back the proposal with a 3 line whip he might be able to claim that.
The only principle at stake is loosing a vote in parliament.
Robin Cooke standing down as foreign secretary after the decision to go to war in Iraq was a decision of principle this is a publicity stunt.
I suspect Davis is now terrified that Cameron has a shot at being Prime Minister and sees himself growling in the wings for years a la Gordon.
He's doubtlessly considering how he might owst "Hug a Hoodie" before he gets into No. 10
There is no group more Machievellian than the parliamentary Conservative party

Neil Hamilton did not lose to Martin Bell in a by-election, he lost in the 1997 general election.
Mr. McKenzie has done himself no favours tonight by describing Hull as a terrible place, or words to that effect.
I only hope that Mr Davis will be funding the cost of this by-election himself as he was the one who instigated it.
