To transfer more of my dvds on to my archos do i need a lower or higher bitrate setting or am i barking up the wrong tree completely.Any suggestions.

Think of it as filling a bath with water using a bucket. A bigger bucket will fill it faster.
To get more files on you will need to look at the compression settings when ripping the dvd into whichever format the Archaos uses.

and will allow you to resample your vids
smaller = less detail ... so you need to experiment with the actual settings. But it's like VHS and DVD recorders ... highQ 1 hour fills a DVD low q 8 hours to the same DVD.
a half hour vid can be reduced to about 50-100Mb and still be quite watchable. But it's a matter of taste
