Scandisk & PC space

Son has an old PC, have deleted loads of files to make some space for a largish CDRom game. Unable to run scandisk [even with all other progs - antivirus etc closed down] any ideas? also what exe.files can we safely removed to make more space?

What operating system are you running on? If it's a version of windows beyond 95 you should be using the "Add/Remove Programs" function in the Control Panel.
Try using "Find Files/Folders" and search for all files larger than, say, 10MB. Find out what they are - if they are not needed, delete them.
