Close, TW, but no cigar! The (thought) experiment is that the cat is in an enclosed box with a tube of gas that could be set off if a certain quantum event, with a 50/50 chance of happening, were to happen. Quantum theory goes that in such a situation both situations will co-exist until the situation is observed, and at that point either one would be seen to have happened. If this were to be taken to the macro scale rather than the quantum scale then the cat would be both alive and dead until the box was opened and the cat observed. Fortunately quantum physics does not apply at the macro level, so the experiment could not work as said. Maybe.
