Assuming you are talking the romantic/ erotic love (eros)  between two people, rather than agape (altruistic love), philia (brotherly love, friendship) or storge (familial love, esp parent/ child), I think it depends further on whether you mean the sort of hot, crazy love which occurs in the initial flush of a relationship or the cooler, deeper love that occurs later in a relationship.

In so far as putting an age on it, I wouldn't like to try, except to say that I think the latter is more likely to be understood by an older person than the former. I've known people get together at 14 and remain so, other who never do.

The only think that I think anyone can really tell you and know to be absolutely true is that no one really understands love. Anyone who claims they do is either lying or in some measure deluded.

None of which, I appreciate, necessarily answers your question.

Sorry - that should read, 'However, I've known people get together at 14 and remain so, other who never do.' in order that it doesn't contradict my previous point.

I think it is an accumullated thing, and you acumulate with experience and age.  There can be no defined age as your perspective changes with age.  When I was younger and thought I was in love and understood it, it pales in significance compared to what I feel now towards my wonderful girlfriend.  But at the time I thought I was the East End Love God !!

Entirely agree with Octavius, everyone has their early relationships and swears its true love, then when they get into future ones they look back and go "wasn't really true love was it".

it's not wrong, everyone does it, but when you "know" you "know" and is one of those infruiating things like parents telling you that school is the free-ist time of your life etc that everyone dismisses but are annoyingly true.
ian, certainly agree that schoo is the free-ist time, but bot the best days.  I wouldn't want to be at school now!
