For a while I thought the extra word was in this clue, but I have worked out who the Bullock is now - thanks to both of you. I've finished the whole crossword and found the extra word. At first I thought it was going to be a Christian name but I can see that "plan" was wrong.

Got most of the thematic references and the seven letter word, but can't work out the unclued word in the bottom right. I've got _ N E S. Could anyone give a hint, please?

Targo, it completes the 'fruit' definition in conjuction with the forename of one of the group.

Taken on its own, this entry is a Spanish girl's name.

My problem is that I have two associations for the same individual (for tenders and know-all) and none for either of the ones with initials AE or HM. And what makes this set of 12 a whole set? Am I correct that the secret word is associated with AE? That leaves me totally stuck on HM.

The secret word is connected with AE - try thinking of a tourist attraction in the South West!

I think what makes this a whole set is that they are all post-war.

Tenders is correct for HM........put his surname with the unclued across entry that starts next to square 19 on the sixth row.

The first association did not serve with the current queen; she was proclaimed Queen on 2/6/1952. CA was out by then. Post WW2 makes sense, but seems contrived. Are the tenders using HMs surname really well-known.? Googling finds them, but not in a confidence-inspring way.

I thought th HM/tenders association was reaonably well-known. I knew it without having to look it up.

Though I finished this some time ago - after a couple of red herrings including religious establishments and public schools - wouldn't it be better to leave such obvious "hints" till after the relevant Thursday deadline?
