I live in a georgian townhouse with a basement level. I would like to put a toilet in the basement which is below ground level, is this possible? are there special toiletsts that work below ground level? what about handbasins too, how will the water drain away?

As drainage/sewer facilities are below ground level, I don't think you'd have problems fitting a toilet, sink or shower in a basement. Most of the DIY programmes seem to install these without too many compications. Good luck.
You can also insatll a loo without adding to the sewrage drain if you use one of the sort with a macerator. Sorry auntie AB but I only know of one company doing these, called sani-flo
