Why do the English Women on this 99% British site call people HUN or BABE, its so Yukky and American?

Language is ever changing. I agree that the use of "classical" words has pretty much died out. (I blame not being allowed to teach vocabulary for that, but that's another topic.)
I am American and find that there seems to be a lot more use of pet names on this site than I tend to hear in my day-to-day life. In general, I don't mind being called 'hun' or the like on here or in real life. It depends on who it is and how it is used.
I have recently heard my students using the word "bird" with a derogatory connotation to describe trampy girls. I believe I have read that word on here to mean women in general. It is all in the usage.
