But it doesn�t take 10 seconds to run a spell chick in word, and my firefox browser at home has a spell check on it as well. Although sometimes I forget to check :os

Again, Hitler, I�m extremely puzzled.

My response in the �camera�s� post simply suggested that the author should learn the correct usage of apostrophes. Why did this make me sound like a �geek�? As I understand it this word, in modern usage, means one who is particularly addicted to computer technicalities (which I certainly am not). Among its earlier usages was to describe bizarre circus acts, such as performers who bit the heads off live animals (which I most certainly do not).

Have we now reached the point where anybody who likes to see proper use of written English is likened to some sort of circus performer?

Why should it be that somebody who demonstrates a little knowledge (and I am by no means bright, but have just managed to remember a few of the things that I was taught at school) is so vilified?

I'm really very puzzled.

One reason is that the education system today is so lax that people leave it not only ignorant, but also unaware of their ignorance. It is now considered politically incorrect to criticise a student's work or to point out their mistakes; thus it is possible to gain a degree and yet know very little about the subject one has supposedly studied.

My son is a university lecturer and at a recent meeting he complained to the head of his department that students were being awarded first-class degrees when in fact their work was second-rate. The professor replied, "Yes, I know, but other universities do it, so we have to."

UNbelievable, but true, I'm sorry to say.
