There is a massive spectrum of alcoholism, from the tramp in the park who has to have strong cider all day every day, to the guy that has to have a few pints at night.
I woldn't say they are of unsound mind, many professionals are alcoholics.

Alchohlism surely means at it's basic level , drinking when you don't really want to . A deffinate sign that there is something mentally wrong .
The Journal of the American Medical Association defines alcoholism as "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking" .

Facing reality without crutches like drink & drugs can be depressing if u let it.
I'm always glad when I awake for another day.....having lost too many relations and friends (younger than me)!
Other people can u down.....I nose into a distraction to avoid them.
U are here for the world to spin around you the way u want it to........remember that!

If the habitual lying and cheating of early stage (and many later stage) is a sign of an unsound mind, and an inability to face reality as it is, again yes.
Any diversion from life that makes people try and make it go away with drugs means they are basically mentally unable to live without some sort of avoidance mechanism, and without actually being a mental illness shows a basic phobia of life itself which is no different from any other that needs professional treatment as it stops you living a normal life.
If you address the reason for the alcohol you stand a chance, apparently simply stopping is not a very popular approach for many.
