Feeding Birds in your Garden.

What should you not put out for the birds in the garden.

I put out bread and seeds from the pet shop.
What other household scrap foods can I put out for the birds eat?

All I do is put out bread crumbs!

When you put bread out you should always soak it first as this is much easier for the younger birds to digest.

Cooked bacon rinds; crumbled cheese; fruit; make your own fat balls, useful even at this time of year; cooked potato; cooked rice

Only put small quantities of this sort of food out, and dispose of anything not eaten by dusk, or you will have rats.

Don't forget water in shallow dishes.

That's why I don't put out anything else apart from bread, Ethel, I had a horrendous rat experience in my previous flat! :O(
And it wasn't because of food left out, btw, it was because the neighbours upstairs used to leave their balck bins out on the fire escape stairs, which attracted the rats. Ewww....

I put bread, cooked rice, seeds, chopped apple, flatbread, I've even put out shredded wheat when I had an excess of it!

LaughingGirl I am a bit with you on this one but I don't agree with slaughtering ALL birds. I find that you can hang out of an upstairs bedroom window and pick off magpies with an air rifle as they strut and chatter around on the lawn, dirty basta$ds.

I put out peanuts and fat balls in the winter .But take the net stuff off first as they can get tangled up in them . You can get special holders for the fat balls .
I melt lard in the microwave and mix it with bread and seed let it harden and cut it into chunks and put that out.This is mostly for winter feeding when there is not much about for them .
I also cut up apples and chuck them on the lawn .
Robins like grated cheese and the Blackies like raisins ,soak them first .I grind up crusts of bread and mix that with suet and throw it on the lawn ..
I also chuck them bits of stale cake etc or cooked rice . I buy mealworms and those dried insect things too.
Sunflower seeds are good and mixed wild bird food

As for you Whiffey ...Magpies are no worse than any other carrion feeders .I admit they are over rife in South London but then so are cockatiels and pigeons .
If they didn't decimate the hedgerows and build over every bl==dy thing in sight there would not be this problem of magpies in suburbia .
