Why is a building site called a 'Plant'? I appreciate that it has 'plant' machinery but why 'plant'?

The Latin 'planta' comes from an Indo-European base meaning 'to spread', and this has also given us the English words flat and place. Maybe this connection has come to mean a building site, which is a flat place.
