Planning Permission for removal of tree in our garden

We have a 14 ft tall x 3 ft wide fir tree in our back garden and want to get rid of it ASAP, do we need planning permission?

I know that deeds for properties in some areas have covenants regarding the planting of trees - they may also apply to the removal of healthy trees, check your legal paperwork from your house purchase (I assume you own - if not then it might be wise to also ask your landlord as a courtesy). As mentioned, discuss it with council and neighbours - in case there is a militant tree hugger in your neighbourhood.
