I agree with Tartanwizard. If you're stroking a cat and its tail starts to thrash from side to side.. very soon it will be lunging for your hand. Cats are kind enough to warn us of their attentions... a lot of their communication is from body language like this.

It's also a sign of indecision - the cat's trying to make up its mind.
