Bathroom Refurb

[FTVS]

We are refurbishing our bathroom. The tiling we are fine with but need any hints or possible pitfalls for:

Replacing basin tap.

Removing old mastic

Putting on a bath panel - currently there is not one so I ma starting from scratch. 

Repairing thermostatic shower/mixer tap on bath. The temp control is jammed - i think the valve might be clogged.

They have DIY leaflets at B&Q and homebase that you can take away for free. Also at B&Q you can go and ask questions and they will help you even if you don't buy anything in the store.
