The Indonesian/Malaysian connection is because of the religion, Islam, shared with the Arabic world. Basically, the words are Arabic for 'son of' and 'daughter of'. 'Bint', on its own, also means 'girl'.
Not just Cockney, Galltin. The word was brought back to Britain by servicemen who'd been posted to Egypt - where Arabic is the prevailing language - during the two World Wars. As a result, it became common all around this country.
