My husband needs to take an extra 10 weeks off work to look after our new baby as I need to go back to work. We understand that he will need to tale this time off unpaid. His last day for paternity leave is tomorrow and he has informed his work that he needs to take this time off. the response he has received so far is that (by his manager) he may have to RESIGN and apply for his job again in sept. BUT she wasnt sure and was going to talk to HR.... He has been with the company 5 1/2 years and has been classed as a "good worker".
I'm sure I read somewhere that fathers could take more than 2 weeks off to look after their child. can anyone help??? thanks in advance

there is a right to ask for more paternity leave, but no right to grant it. Just as he can ask for unpaid leave, but has no automatice right to receive it
Should really have stared negotiation for this before now. Look at from the employers' point of view. You mean to say you were telling us you would return to work next Wednesday and now you are saying you don't wish to return until September?
Try negotiation, but expect to have to compromise. I wouldn't have accepted this when I did this type of role in industry.
