I was one of the unfortunate ones who didn't realise what damage this could do if it was not changed and it broke:-(

I collected my car Friday after a week in the garage, all the valves had been damaged!!!

When I went to drive off I thought it made some strange sounds. I explained to the mechanic and said when I revved it and then took my foot off the accelerator it made like a whirring sound. He came to the car with me and then explained it was because the new belt they had put on was new and tight compared to the old one and it just needed wearing in.
So off I went home but the further I went, the more noise it seemed to make. So what I'm asking is, is it really just that it needs wearing in? Or as I'm a woman, are they having me on at the garage?
I did get a receipt so obviously I can take it back should there be anything wrong, but I'd rather not have to break down again

thanks

By your description of the noise i suspect that the new belt is too tight and needs to be adjusted correctly, or a tensioner/idler pulley should have been replaced
What year make and model of car is it as most cars have a self adjusting tensioner
ususall i would replace the water pump at the same time as a new belt kit would put added stress onto the water pump pulley and on most cars its just as easy to replace the water pump while th ebelt is being replaced
timing belts shouldnt whine under normal circumstances, there are reasons for a noisy belt but is due to some other factor...water pump, tensioner pulleys etc. the garage should of picked this up.... take it back...
David is right I had a noise in my car on 20 June like a ball bearing jumping around a washing machine when put foot on accelerator about 3 miles later car cut out on A2 going into M25 used momentum to get on hard shoulder and it wouldnt start again got towed and it turned out my water pump was leaking and needed replacing which until they did that couldnt confirm what else was wrong which as it turned out had caused me to need a new head gasket - cost 670 and wont have car back until next week! I had no warning prior to that one trip - I had no idea about all this and yes I'm a woman as well but know the mechanic isnt ripping me off

Thanks for all your answers.

I took the car back because I also noticed it was idling too high, almost like the choke was permanently on.
They tinkered with it and I've got it back now and it's noise free and drives just like it used to.....ahhhh
