Help !! I have an internal card reader on my PC in a 3.5" bay, and recently the PC was away at the hospital. When it came back, this card reader was shown in "My Computer" as a "Device with removeable storage" as drive "H". It was working fine until now. It is not showing under My Computer and does not "activate" (?) when I insert an SD card. However, the USB port also on this reader works fine !! Can anybody throw any light on this matter ? Any help would be extremely welcome.

Have you install any new hard/software or removed any programmes?

Unfortunately the reader isn't connected to USB ... (as far as windows is concerned) - btw XP or vista

why in hospital ?

open the box .... it sounds to me as if they've disturbed the connector

if not that

open device manager ... and it should be under disc drives
as "generic usb flash2 - so the drivers are just there.

you could try deleting the entry and rebooting ... windows might pick it up

It's me again for AC the Troll - just checked Device manager - the card reader is not listed.

Have you restarted since you got it back?

If you haven't, and you've used the disconnect system from system tray in bottom-right, all the drives can be 'removed' until next restart.

Hi fo3nix
I've had it back for over a week. On the first day it was home, I tried everything out to check they hadn't "mucked" anything up and the card reader was working fine. I used it last week as well, fine again. It was only when I tried to use it yesterday that it has "disappeared" again, although the USB port on the same reader is working OK.
Many thanks

if it's not in device manager ... it's not there

given what you said ... it's probably just disconnected
if you don't feel confident take it back .... if you do ... check both ends of the cable(S)

Hi AC the Troll
Many thanks for your troubles. Checked all the connections, all seem to be OK. By process of elimination, I think the card reader has probably got an intermittent fault - any opinions ?
Thanks again
