Hi,

I've just found out that I'm expecting our 3rd child but my partner has been on a drug called Methotrexate to treat his arthiritis for a few months now and was advised not to get me pregnant while on it. None of us really know why and although I know I need to see my doctor, I can't get an appointment for a few days and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it?

yes, methotrexate is a chemotherapy drug which is cytotoxic (destroys cells) when its being used for arthritis it tilises this in order to dampen down the auto immune response. It suppresses the immune system. therefore it is dangerous and inadvisable to get pregnant while taking it. It is a teratogenic drug meaning that it is able to produce birth defects or interfere with the growth and development of a foetus
My friend's husband was taking metotextrate for his Rhumathiod arthritis when she fell pregnant unexpectedly. They were undecided what to do, the doctors gave the worse case scenario, and after a long chat they decided whatever will be will be...Little Milia arrived at 27 weeks, but did very well and is now a happy healthy 7 year old who is above average at school.
I don't know the ins and out of potential problems, but just thought I'd share a happy story x

Thanks for the happy story. Glad there is one! Spoke to doctor this morning who's going to find out more and get back to me. I suppose I need to decide what I want to do given the worst case scenario as well. I have 2 kids already which makes it harder I think.
