I have dug up my Leylandii trees and want to extend my lawn to cover the ground where the trees were. The grass doesn`t seem to want to grow there. Could you tell me why, and if there`s anything I can do about it? Thank you.
Grass rarely grows under Leylendii, as they are very thirsty and hungry trees, taking out noisture and nutriants. Once you have got rid, dig up ground to let it rehydrate and with good cultivation and fertilizer I dont see any reason why your grass shouldnt thrive.
The roots should have been removed down to about 6 inch before you seeded or turfed the area.
Dryness will be a problem for the grass so for a couple of years you should "over" water it and feed it well. Just as L'scaper said really!!

I always understood that conifer 'leaves' (can't remember the name) sterilised the soil they fall onto. You notice this going through a pine forest. You might have to take a good foot of soil away and replace it with good soil. Just an idea.
