I was reading through some old answers here a while back and came across a thread that explained how you can insert a � character into any document, or even a �.

for those of you who didnt read it, this is done by holding down the 'alt' key and typing 171 or 172 on the keypad.

I thought this was a great little tip, and so this got me thinking, how about a thread where everyone puts up their favourite tips, and we can all share these ideas?

F2 to rename is my favourite, noone seems to use that.

I use F2 as I rename lots of files. Sorry to burst your bubble ;-)
In fact, I also use batch files to rename things so that I can rename 20 files at once & send the batch file to other people with the same files for to do the same with little effort.

If you open a text editor and save the following as anyFilename.bat :
rename "originalFilename01.mp3" "Red Morning Light.mp3"
rename "originalFilename02.mp3" "Happy Alone.mp3"

(etc.)

and then double click on the saved .bat file it'll rename them for you. The .bat file has to be in the same folder as the renamed files.
I think that's possibly a bit too obscure for many people to use frequently but there you go.

shift F10 is the same as a right mouse click.

 

If anybody can explain why MS picked this key combo id like to know
