My 12 year old son loves animals and would like to spend some time with any animals to get some experience of being a vet. Does anyone know of any places that allow children to observe or help out with animals?

A dogs/cats home is the obvious choice or an animal sanctuary. It may be difficult because of his age though! Perhaps a neighbour might be glad of help during the holidays with dog walking or feeding a cat for a bit of pocket money. My 7 year old daughter wants to be a vet one day and have an ice-cream van the next!
Many zoos and animal parks have zookeeper for the day experiences for a donation.

Many places also have experiences with owls and birds of prey.

Maybe he could write or you could call around a few loccal vets, city farms, zoo or cat/ dog home etc. I was a little older when I did work experience, but asked and they replied yes. At least that way he'd get something he actually wanted if the school agreed.
just be sure to blag about your holiday in a kenyan animal sanctuary and you live on a farm, you love animals and are a vegetarian!
