eye infection

Can you get an eye infection from dog hairs? My husband slept on our son's sofa last week and they are not very hygenic and allow the 2 dogs full access to their seating. He already has sensitive eyes from childhood.

any foreign body that gets into the eye can potentially cause an infection, especially in someone with sensitive eyes, even a spec of dust blwon in by the wind.  Didn't he get a pillow etc, to keep his face off the doggied sofa??

Have to be honest, our cats get full access to our sofas, as would any dogs we own.  Personally I don't see that in itself as particularly unhygenic, unless of course any dog hairs etc are never removed, and the sofas aren't treated to a bit of a steam clean now and then.

If a dog hair got into your eye in could, of course, cause an infection, but so could a human hair.  I have two dogs and three cats who have access to the our seating, and the beds!  I certainly do not consider our home to be unhygenic!  Our bedding and sofa covers and washed fairly regularly.

Just want to say thank you for the replies on the eye infection. I wasn't trying to imply you pet owners are unhygenic,no offence intended. You can tell we are not pet owners, but our son and daughter-in-law are both disabled and not too keen on cleanliness. They now have a new baby to look after and only 2 hours a week with 2 cleaners!

Marion29.  No offence taken at all.  Try not to worry about your daughter and son in law and their hygiene or the baby.  Babies are so resilient and there has been a lot of research to say that babies brought up in less than spotless homes have a far better immunity to all the bugs and diseases around.  They now think that asthma is on the increase because of the obsession with 'anti bacterial' sprays, etc.  They also say  children brought up with pets are much more well adjusted.

 

If you stay with them again I should take a sleeping bag and your own pillows to help with your husband's eye problem.
