Alternately you can put the ps3 hard drive in your laptop and use your system c to format it.

Or buy a new 2.5 sata hard drive.

I had exactly the same thing happen ! I couldn't find a friend willing to let me swap hard drives so I tried taking the hard disc out and using a caddy to plug it into my pc to format the drive, but my PC wouldn't recognise it. In the end I called the Playstation customer helpdesk and they got a new machine out to me the next day (apparently they can't just swap the hard drive - it has to be the whole PS3.) When I say "new" it was actually a reconditioned machine but it works fine.
One warning - if you do reformat the PS3 hard drive you will lose any data including game saves. You will have to start MSG4 again from scratch. Unless you've done a back up before it went.
I don't know what caused the crash. It was either the kids turning off the machine while a game was mid-save or it was the latest PS3 upgrade downloaded.
