I don't think they absolutely MUST stay upright. Remember to leave it 24 hours when you've reached the end destination before you plug it in to let the gases settle to their proper state.

The British Heart Foundation has a large store in Ipswich which sells secondhand fridges and freezers. They display a sign stating that the warranty will be invalidated if the fridge/freezer is not left to stand in an upright position for 2 days, prior to being switched on, after being transported on its side.

That policy seems to be in line with the general recommendation that it's 'preferred practice' to move a fridge/freezer in an upright position but no harm will occur if the unit is given sufficient 'standing time' after being moved on its side.

I bought a secondhand fridge in 1991 and transported it in the back of my car. I left it in an upright position for several days before turning it on. It worked fine up until earlier this year, so the horizontal move can't have done it much harm ;-)
