What is the differenc between a shrimp and a prawn?

I was watching a cookery programme and the chef was referring to prawns as shrimps when an expert corrected him saying "they're not prawns they're shrimps". What is the difference because I always thought they were the same thing. Also do potted shrimps taste nice?

Prawns are bigger than shrimps and a little less salty but for culinary purposes are all but the same. The tastiest shrimps are tinned, e.g. John West.

But the Americans call prawns shrimp so there is no difference there as they are all shrimp

Prawns are pink ..shrimps are brown ..
prawns make me very ill ..shrimps don't ..
and they taste different ..best shrimp

surely they are all grey/ brown till you cook them,then they are pink. I grew up eating Dublin Bay Prawns, but now know them as Langoustines, so what does it matter?
