felling of leylandi
6 Answers
I have a large leylandi approx 15ft high, 15ft dia and approx 20ft from the centre of the trunk to the property. Can this tree be felled in one go or do I have to chop it down gradually over a period of time because of the threat of heave.

I once had a diagram from a paper showing the minimum recommended distances for different tree types in different soils - can't find it and a websearch didn't throw up anything useful enough.
Leylandii are not renown for sucking up water in the same way as some other species and at 20 feet away, it is my (unqualified) opinion that you are OK, even in clay. However it is probably worth approaching a local tree surgeon (and not some bloke what chops branches off in his spare time) for an expert opinion.

the answer is simple.
chop down in manageable sections then dig round stump and it will come out.
these conifers are shallow rooted and only a small tap root.
i recently took eight out , one at a time, and also cutting the wood isno problem as the wood is soft.
good luck and its better than using chemicals because with the addition of some compost the area can be replanted again.
