planning and /or permission

i am looking to buy upto 10 acres of land in the uk with the intension of living on it, do i need planning permmission to put a caravan on it,

I saw an episode of 'Homes Under the Hammer' a few weeks ago where a lady had bought a plot of land and was intending to put a caravan on the site to live in whilst she sought planning permission to build a house. But the bloke from the planning department said that she needed to apply for permission to live in the caravan on the site and that they would not allow a house to be built on the site anyway, so they would probably not allow her to live in a caravan there either.

If you are *changing the use* of the land, then, yes, you probably will need planning permission. What is the land used for at the moment ?

there are varying ways round this, but essentially whatever you live in you need permission to live there, although you can erect certian buildings and live in those without planning permission as long as they don't realise it. Depends on how legally minded you are, devious and so forth, but it can be done, once or twice quite famously people built houses inside large agricultural buildings, but that sort of thing is getting harder and harder to pull off, but quite a bit of fun and well worth the effort if you've got the disposition:)

You'd be best off contacting the Planning Department of the Local Authority and determining what 'usage' the land already has attached to it.................

If it's greenbelt - it's very unlikely you'll get permission; outside development boundary of village/town - also v. unlikely.

cheers Jugglering i've not got any land yet wanted to get the info first but would probably be grazing/meadow land

Then, in order to put a caravan on it, you would be probably changing the use (from grazing/meadow to residential) and therefore it's probable that you would need planning permission. You really need to have a chat with the planning people of your local authority - they are not ogres btw - and see what they say.

You don`t need planning permission to put a caravan on land you own and you can live in it. Also you can build a log cabin or some types of pre fab structure houses and you don`t need planning permission for them either. There are some already being lived in.
