Do BT promise everyone BT Broadband?? N. Ireland
11 Answers
I have a friend who still can`t get Broadband, surely this isn`t right in 2008 that they can`t have some way of getting it to her area. Well actually a neighbour about a mile away can, she can`t. I keep typing her phone number and postcaode into BT Broadband web site, it just tells me she is too far from exchange. Did BT not promise it for everyone?? Any advice welcome Darcy

how can anyone "promise" ?
as for cable ... do you honestly think cable will pay the 40000 per mile it costs to blow fiber into an estate ...
in an area that is unlikely to have any other services provided by underground feed? you are talking three or four times that amount
I wonder if they even have a gas supply?
within walking distance of my house most of the rural houses don't have sewerage (cesspools are more popular (and common) than swimming pools ... all either use oil heating or callor tanks.
transmission using copper comes with physical rules which apply to the whole universe.

yep it was promised to everyone, but there was some small print in that promise!
BT have to provide broadband to everyone... as long as the cost of providing it isn't more than a set amount (can't remember the amount though!) but I think it's fairly high, around the 100K region.
this gives BT a "get out" clause on that promise because if you decided to setup home on a remote off shore UK island the cost of providing broadband to you might run to millions!
I think it was also worked out on a wider basis, i.e. if 50 households setup home on that island and all wanted broadband they might have to do it because the cost per person would fall below the "cut off" limit.

gina,
although you may have changed provider your broadband is still being supplied by BT, it just that you now pay somebody else for the service and they then pay BT.
If the OP's friend can't get broadband from BT they will not be able to get it from anybody as no matter who they try they still will have the same BT line coming into the house that is connected to the same BT exchange.
There are a few companies about that specialise in providing broadband to people that can't get it the normal way by using long distance wireless links back to a point that can get normal broadband, but these are very expensive.

everyone keeps banging on about bt this bt that .... the local loop is now open ... if ntl or any other provider could see a profit ... they are free to install or extend the loop into local estates or even rural areas .....
but for some reason ... no one wants to.
in blubberhouses it's not uncommon for a farm to be fed overhead using over 100 poles ... imagine the cost of trenching that distance - the puswa permissions (3 months) and the people involved in actually digging a trench .... and laying cable or fibre - all for one person who will pay their rental of 50 for 3 months .... and then go to talk talk .... or orange
it was the government (OFTEL) who promised .... not bt
think coinboxes ... the other providers were eager to own the supermarkets and university sites .... but how many rural sites did they take? .... (the answer is 0)
the call centers, banks, etc all moved away making 1000s unemployed ... so now your dyson costs 10 less than a hoover.... and you have to deposit 1000 per month just to open an account - if you could afford to save ... you do get 3% on long term investments
hell you go into hospital ... you come out with more than you went in with (if you are lucky enough to come out) .... local surgeries are costly .... so what's the solution?
but broadband is far more important ... or how to configure customised ringtones .....
choice comes at a price ... and this is it ... if it's not profitable ... no one is interested .....
..... oh but we did all get 200 shares ... so it was worth it ..... wasn't it? ...... wasn't it?
