Variations in tempaerature across the surface of the globe, and during seasons, are a result of the earth being spherical and tilting on its axis. If you could isolate a 1km beam of sunlight coming from the sun, the spherical shape and the tilt of the earth mean that the same quantity of sunbeam is spread over less surface at the equator, and when a region is tilted nearer to the sun, and over more surface towards the poles or when a region is tilted away from the sun.
