I have received a bill to pay back excess of child tax credit.
However Inland Revenue has sent me 3 varied assessments and 3 bills for the same tax year. I believe that all are incorrect.
Also I have had to pay more tax as in 2002-2003 my employer did not adjust my tax code.

It seems a mess. How can I obtain an assessment of what my tax situation should be by a third party? Do you recommend that I contact an ombudsman?

We had a similar problem a couple of years ago with the child tax credit system . They kept sending us conflicting tax assessments , as you may have found out phoning up the inland revenue can be a waste of time as in 'one advisor will give you different information to another' .

The thing we did was to make an appointment with a welfare officer at our local council department who deals with these issues , and also calculated what we should of being getting.

Maybe you could try this route.
